Place: grand palaisartistic director: virginie viardcollection: métiers d’art 2019/20title: paris-31 rue cambonevery year since 2002, chanel’s métiers d’art collection highlights the exceptional work of the house’s ateliers. this ready-to-wear collection presented in december celebrates the artisanal know-how of embroiderers, plumassiers, jewellers, pleaters, shoemakers, milliners or glover-makers grouped within paraffection, with the aim to protect and preserve these manufacturers.this collection by virginie viard, who has taken over the artistic direction of chanel since the death of karl lagerfeld, reflects the first show of métiers d’arts presented in 2002 in the salon of 31 rue cambon. for the occasion, this legendary address has been transposed in the centre of the grand palais by the filmmaker sofia coppola (long-time friend of the house). we go back into the salon with the huge mirrored staircase of gabrielle chanel‘s apartment, decorated with coromandel screens, chandeliers and talismans.collection: elegant, sophisticated and contemporary, using the chanel codes. the models walk down the steps of the grand staircase and go into the living room. the collection consists of straight double-breasted coats, lace and satin dresses dotted with pearls, studded with rhinestone and embroidered with camellias. the bicolour dresses the graphic suits. tweed is treated with finesse and lightness for the short suit jackets, low waist skirts slit on the front and accessorised with fine chain-linked and pearl belts…tie-dye is displayed on flowy muslin skirts and dresses lined with feathers. black and white are very present, lit up by soft shades or more intense tones like fuchsia pink or garnet-red. the fluid pleated dresses are accessorised with a collection of jewellery, bracelets, necklaces, bows and camellias, and the iconic bags of the house become miniature accessories that are worn like jewels. to note: the front row with the presence of many personalities and muses such as penélope cruz, vanessa paradis, marion cotillard, kristen stewart, carole bouquet, caroline de maigret, lily-rose depp..music from the show (to use only in context of the show, under cover of the right to information)
